I have a fireplace, hearth and mantle made from used brick. It is ugly ! My floors are cream & brown travertine. How can I change it without tearing it all down and starting over ? I could tear off the mantle but not the rest. I don't want to cover it with the travertine that's on my floors either. It would be too much. I've thought of paint, plaster or stone but don't know if it's possible ???

Any clues?

I think I would be inclined to tear off the mantle and to replace it with a lovely wooden one. Using thin wood you can construct a simple mantle that can be fitted around the brick. It looks like a solid piece of wood, but it's really a "box" built without a bottom or back that slips over the top of your brick work. If the brick looks OK, then you're done. If not, I would paint the brick.
